    HOW
TO PREPARE FOR YOUR FIRST GAME SHOOT

    Before you go

There is a particular buzz to the night before a shoot. You lay your kit out, you check the weather twice, and you wonder if you will remember everyone’s names. Totally normal.

If you are thinking about your first game shoot preparation, start simple. Ask what sort of day it is, driven or walked up; pheasant or partridge or both; practical or smart; tie or no tie; expected tips for keepers: and whether lunch is in a pub, shoot hut or in the main house. Those details set the tone for everything else, from boots to cartridges.

What to wear, without overthinking it

Aim for quiet, practical, and weather ready. A tweed or muted jacket is lovely, but the real star is layering. A thin base layer, a warm jumper, and then something that shrugs off rain will keep you comfortable and calm.

Choose trousers or breeks that let you move. Pick boots with grip and ankle support, because fields get slick and gateways get muddy. Bring a flat cap or hat for sun or drizzle and a pair of gloves you can actually feel the gun through. You might notice your hands go stiff when you are tense, so warmth helps.

And yes, a spare pair of socks is never a silly idea.

    Gun fit and cartridges

A gun that fits makes everything feel steadier. If the stock is too long or the comb too low, you will fight it all day. If you can, have someone knowledgeable watch you mount the gun. Even a small tweak can make a big difference to comfort and confidence.

Cartridges are not just cartridges. Check the shoot’s guidance, then choose a sensible load for the quarry. For many beginners, lighter recoil feels kinder and leads to better shooting. Take more than you think you will need, but not so much you are lugging a small boulder around a field.

Hearing protection, safety, and the gentle art of manners

Wear ear protection. Every time. A lot of newcomers worry it will spoil the experience, but good earplugs or defenders simply take the sting out of the bangs and leave the birdsong intact.

Keep the muzzle in a safe direction, break the gun when you are not on the peg, and never load until you are in position and told it is time. If you are unsure, ask. Nobody worth listening to will mock a safety question.

Etiquette is mostly about awareness. Be on time. Note your peg number and listen to the instructions on peg movement. Stand where you are placed. Let birds cross the line and take your shots safely, not desperately. Pick up your empty cases. Thank the beaters and pickers up. It is a small thing, but it matters.

A little practice goes a long way

If you can, have a session on clays beforehand. Not to become brilliant overnight, but to make the movements feel familiar. Practise mounting smoothly, following through, and taking a moment to breathe before calling for the target. That calm pause is gold on a real drive.

If you want help choosing gear, sorting fit, or just talking it through without any fuss, London Gun Company is the sort of place that treats beginners with the same care as old hands.

    One last thing

On the day, focus on being safe, steady, and pleasant company. The shooting will come. If you would like a bit of tailored guidance before you step onto the peg, have a look here and book a chat.
