Established by James Purdey in London in 1814, the company still enjoys an enviable reputation. His son, also James, took control in 1858 filing several patents receiving its first Royal Warrant in 1868 from the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, and from Queen Victoria in 1878. In 1880 the first Purdey hammerless gun was produced and Beesley’s self-opening action patented although it was 1920 before its first over-and-under was manufactured.
